Paternity Leave...Have You Taken Yours? Xx
With the birth of the Cameron’s gorgeous new baby girl, the Prime Minister is taking precious time off to spend with his family. However it seems it is becoming increasingly harder for dads to take time away from work, to spend with their newborns and tired wives. This is invaluable time in which parents bond with their babies and support each other through the initial sleepless nights and nappy changing!
After the arrival of recently named Florence, the Prime Minister is taking his statutory paternity leave. However with a new baby comes a lot of stress and pressure (of course there is also the overwhelming love and happiness which makes it all worth while)! However babies need A LOT of nappies, pyjamas, baby grows, toys, carriers, bottles and sterilizers (to name a few)! This is why many new fathers are finding it hard to justify this time away from work…money! Somebody needs to fund all of these things, 45% of new fathers did not take paternity leave in 2009, according to a report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. 88% of these said they would have liked to and 49% explained they simply could not afford to. At the moment new fathers with long enough service are entitled to £124.88, or 90% of their average weekly wage - if that is lower than this figure. Within the average 40-hour working week, this figure comes in well below minimum wage. Fathers are also granted to take an additional 13 weeks off, UNPAID! - This should be taken before the child turns five. From April 2011, new mothers will be able to transfer the second half of their year long maternity leave to the father. But this too will be UNPAID and again very unhelpful to those who cannot afford to go without this vital wage.
In contemporary society it seems crazy that the current laws only reinforce the typical 1950’s view that women are homemakers and men are breadwinners.
Unfortunately for many men they don’t feel what should be a statutory decision is truly an option! What should be put in place and what actually is, are two very different things, and it has been noted that in many work places it is frowned upon to take leave from work even where you are awarded it. It has also been suggested that a father’s paternity leave ends just as outside interest in the new baby wears off, leaving the woman alone to look after the baby.
We think its about time the UK’s system caught up with society and offered mothers and fathers the opportunity to share paid maternity leave… xx
