Pregnant Women Should Drink More Milk!

It was recently in the news that pregnant women who drink milk regularly could help their children avoid osteoporosis later in life. Osteoporosis is when your bones become weaker and more fragile, which means they are more prone to breaking easily. Recent medical reports suggest that teenagers are more likely to have strong bones if their mother drank milk regularly (preferably daily) while they were pregnant with them. The findings are significant because bone mass starts to decline in your 20s. This surfaced when around 216 teen bone densities were tested as part of a study that began back in the 80’s. A number of pregnant women were asked to record their diets whilst pregnant so that we could see if there was a link between their diets and their children’s health later in life. They found that those mothers who consumed the most milk during their pregnancy resulted in their children having better bones…so make sure you are getting a good intake of milk! And of course, a healthy balance of foods through out your pregnancy, ensuring the best health for you and baby!

A few other suggestions to keep you and baby healthy are:

  • Exercise! It will help you keep in shape throughout your pregnancy. And help you recover more quickly to your pre-pregnancy body, lower your risk of miscarriage, and has been proven to help reduce complications during labour and labour length. Join a prenatal yoga or exercise class. Continue to exercise, even if you have to slow down. Swimming is great in late pregnancy. It can help relieve a lot of aches and pains and makes you feel weightless
  •  Aside from exercise be sure to REST when you can…Nap! Practice relaxation, keeping you de-stressed and comfortable.
  •  Drink six - eight glasses of water a day, and keep hydrated.
  •  Remember to add 300 - 500 calories a day while pregnant, however be sure not to over indulge! 300 calories is not as many as you may think.
  •  Keep a food diary to ensure that you are keeping up with your daily requirements.
  •  Pregnant women should try to eat 7 or more servings of either fruit or vegetables per day.
  •  And of course be sure to ask your partner to join you on your new healthy habit changes for support!
  •  Where you can try and use non-medical remedies to cure problems such as nausea, constipations and headaches so that your baby is taking in a little medicine as possible.
  • Stretch before bed to help prevent leg cramp and keep comfortable.

Good luck and Happy pregnancy! We hope these handy tips will help! xx
