Taking Care Of The Planet...Taking Care Of Your Baby...xx

Today it is hard to go a day without hearing about Carbon footprints recycling and saving the planet! It is quickly becoming a way of life rather than a lifestyle choice.

And of course we want to do as much as we can to conserve the environment for our babies future. So where better to start, than with your baby? No we don’t mean recycle your baby! We’re talking about re-useable nappies!

Did you know that every year Disposable nappies are filling up our landfill sites at a staggering rate of 2 billion a year?  By the time they reach two and a half, an average child will have used approximately 6,500 nappies – which equates to over 10 tonnes of waste, 40 black sacks per child per year or if you prefer a colourful image, as many as 70,000 double-decker buses stretching end to end from Edinburgh to London.

Disposable nappies are made of plastics, elastics, adhesives, paper pulp, and chemicals, which do not readily degrade and could also leak toxins into the ground. In fact it’s estimated that it could take hundreds of years (some guess at more than 500 years) before nappies begin to break down.

In addition to this, the soiling in them means that as they rot, methane, a greenhouse gas about twice as bad as Co2, is released contributing to global warming. In fact the number of disposable nappies used in a child’s life accounts for as much as 630kg of methane – which is as much as a car would use over 1800 miles. Scary isn’t it?

As you know Huggababy loves natural fabrics, and not only because they are kind to your babies skin but also because they are much more biodegradable they have not undergone any nasty finishing processes. That’s why we want to encourage new parents to undertake the same motto and think about your baby’s futures. Invest in high quality sustainable pieces that will last rather than low quality throwaway pieces. It is better for your baby’s sensitive skin and their future environment.

If you are unsure about whether you are going to use re-useable or disposable nappies take a look at how cute and cuddly our bamboo cotton nappies are and we’re sure you won’t be able to resist…
