Baby's First Hair Cut xx
Throughout the first few years of our baby’s lives we go through a number of firsts from teething, steps, solids, bottles, potties and of course the dreaded hair cut! At what point do we start to think about giving our baby their first haircut? How should we approach this particular first? Well sit down get comfy and let Huggababy do the legwork. Firstly here are some handy tips about how to go about the whole experience.
1. Why not go first? Take your little one to the hair dressers with you and let them watch while you get your hair cut – they will soon see it is nothing to be scared off (even if the hair dresser is making a complete mess- keep on smiling through for babies sake!).
2. If they won’t sit still, calmly use positive ways of telling them to sit still, for example if you tell them that the hairdresser might cut their ear off if they don’t sit still then they will feel more anxious. Use phrases such as; ‘it will take longer’, ‘you will have a silly hair cut or we won’t have time to’…all of which are warning baby but not making them feel more uncomfortable about the situation.
3. Don’t take baby when they are tired this will just lead to a more stressful experience with a cranky baby!
4. When baby has the cape on uncover their hands so that they do not feel out of control, and try and give them a toy to clutch, which may comfort them.
5. In new and daunting situations some babies prefer to stay close if this the case be your babies booster – let them sit on your lap whilst they have their cut.
6. Take a photo before and after. Not only for yourself but also to show them the outcome of having their haircut. Celebrate the occasion but do not make too big a deal that they become overwhelmed.
7. Finally be sure to treat baby after the cut so that they associate it as a positive trip. Hugg and reassure baby, telling them how good their new ‘do’ looks.
In terms of when should baby have their first cut there is no hard fast rule…it seems that whenever feels right for you and your baby is the time to make an appointment…Let us know your thoughts on the subject; have you been thinking about getting your little ones hair cut? Are you unsure of how to go about it? Or do you have any tips for the rest of us?
